Auckland Radiation Oncology

New Zealand’s first private Radiation Oncology Centre. The new build consists of two Linear Accelerator bunkers with associated clinical spaces, a café, and a linked two level carpark.

RCP have been involved in site master planning and the Cancer Care Centre design from early 2005 providing Project Management, Contract Administration and Project Programming.

The development, due for completion September 2008, proved challenging, given a confined, fully operational hospital site with business as usual continuation imperative. Other site constraints included strict planning rules with height and view shaft limitations.

Geotechnical issues on the site generally proved to have solid rock where excavation was required and poor material where good founding pressures were needed.

The construction of the Bunkers required an 18 tonne plate of steel located precisely above the Linear Accelerator, encased within up to 2.5m thick concrete walls and ceilings. The facility was initially planned for one bunker, however an additional bunker has been completed and Linac installed within the contract period. Initial high levels of patient interest has proven this decision.

RCP have been the Project Managers on-site at Middlemore Hospital since late 2004. We have undertaken a number of projects with a combined value of $130M+, working closely with the DHB’s Board, Senior Management and Staff members to ensure best practice and benchmarking principles are incorporated in the briefing, design and construction of the projects ensuring least disruption and business as usual for the hospital.

Our role includes Project Management, Contract Administration, Project Programming and Site Masterplanning.

Our first project on the Middlemore site was the Adult Medical Centre Shell Extension and fit-out. A difficult vertical extension of the existing and occupied AMC Building including the fit-out of 60 new beds on Level 3 (two wards – Respiratory and Gastroenterology) and the creation of shell space for a further 120 beds on Levels 4 & 5 which were fitted out immediately (four wards including General Surgical and Orthopedic) completing the AMC building.

The Tunnels and Corridors Redevelopment project was the most difficult and disruptive project a public hospital would ever hope to endure. Middlemore Hospital has been developed in an ad-hoc manner over many years with buildings and services tunnels constructed on multiple levels, causing the different buildings to be connected by a series of confusing, inter-connecting ramps and lifts. In order to overcome the health & safety and wayfinding issues, the project team designed, staged and built new corridors and courtyards through the heart of the existing buildings, creating a much better pedestrian flow throughout the facility.

The Edmond Hillary Block is a significant new build project to complement the existing services at Middlemore and will help the site cater for the expected future growth in acute services for many years to come. Initially opening with 60 ward beds and a new Cardiac Investigation Unit, it is anticipated that the building will be fully occupied within 2-3 years of the initial opening in July 2009.

Auckland District Health Board projects include a re-organisation of four existing hospitals into one, operating on two sites, to deliver world class patient management, treatment and care in facilities creating new benchmarks in the region. The budget for the capital works alone is over NZ$450M.

RCP worked with the Hospitals Building Programme and Management staff to provide a comprehensive briefing to the design team who where drawn from both Australia and New Zealand. A full scale mockup of clinical cares of ward and operating theatre were constructed to refine the design and confirm both functionality and capital works budget through value engineering reviews.

The programme of works on the Grafton site included a new 78,000m² clinical services building, new carpark and laboratory facility and refurbishment of the old hospital building, Starship, Oncology and expansion of the central plant, total value $300M.

On the Greenlane site the development included a new Ambulatory Care Centre together with refurbishment of the old Greenlane Hospital buildings and central plant facilities, total value $70M
