RCP is delighted to announce its dual appointment as both design managers and delivery project managers for the New Dunedin Hospital. Scheduled for phased completion between mid-2026 to 2028, it will be New Zealand’s largest healthcare project and represent the single largest construction project in Dunedin by value.
Situated in the heart of Dunedin city, the new hospital will be largely located on the former Cadbury factory site and an adjacent city block. Matt Allen, RCP Director and South Island Regional Manager, is leading the appointment. “This project is really important to us. It not only continues RCP’s proud history delivering major national health facilities, but we get to be part of a truly transformational project for the city of Dunedin and for health services generally in the South Island” said Allen. “We are excited about the potential for this project, not only in terms of the clinical capacity and leading-edge health services it will provide the southern region, but the opportunity for the hospital campus to integrate with local health education institutions such as the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic. It will be a wonderful catalyst for Dunedin’s knowledge economy and local construction sector” adds Allen.
Following its recent appointment, RCP has not wasted any time getting the project underway. “The next two years will be full on dealing with the design phase, demolition and site preparation. Once this is complete, our attention will turn to managing the delivery of the hospital. These projects are complex and risky, and we are fortunate to be working alongside great team of health planners and design consultants” said Allen.
RCP is not new to Dunedin having enjoyed a local office presence in Dunedin for three years and managing projects locally for nearly ten. “The New Dunedin Hospital project allows us to continue to invest and grow in our local office and reinforce our commitment we have made to the city and the Otago region. We have been quietly growing our capability and capacity in the South Island for a number of years and this project will provide a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talents of our team”, Allen concludes.
The New Dunedin Hospital continues RCP’s recent experience in major public healthcare facilities including projects at Taranaki Base Hospital, Burwood Hospital, Tauranga Hospital, Christchurch Hospital, North Shore Hospital, Middlemore and Auckland City Hospital.
