Christchurch Hospital looks after many of the South Island’s sickest children and some from the lower North Island. The Maia Health Foundation is wonderful local charitable foundation whose mission is “to enhance the health experience in Canterbury – taking it from good to great.” They have raised $3.2 million to enhance the children’s facilities at Christchurch Hospital Hagley.
A key part of this improvement project is the Matatiki Hub, a large indoor play area adjacent to the children’s wards on Level 7. The play area is in its final stages of construction and fitout.
The 120m² space will provide a positive healing distraction for children spending time in hospital. There will be cool play spaces to explore including an indoor tree and slide, as well as interactive technology, a shiny new Radio Lollipop studio and social spaces for the older kids.
RCP has donated our time to the Maia Health Foundation and the project. RCP Project Manager, Farran Inglis says “the Play Space will make a huge difference to the children’s experience of a hospital stay. Credit must also go to Carsten Auer and his team at Architectus for the incredible design, and Cook Brothers Construction for pulling out all the stops to get it built on a tight time-frame and to such high quality.”
Along with the rest of the project partners, RCP can’t wait to see this wonderful new enhancement finished and in use.
