Bio

James joined RCP’s Infrastructure team in 2022 and is working to develop management surveillance quality assurance (MSQA) support for clients, particularly in the local and central government space. Awareness of MSQA’s critical role in successful project delivery has grown following several high-profile failures of major projects around the country. James’ focus is to ensure that an asset or contract is being executed in accordance with the specification and deliverables.

James is driven to do things right. He says the best thing about doing a thorough job is that you can walk away and forget about the specific details and enjoy the lifelong friendships forged by a successful asset delivery.

With a degree in physics from the University of Canterbury, James went on to complete a masters in applied physics at MIT in Boston. He can be described as a scientist with engineering qualifications. So, while he’s not an engineer, he knows how to speak their language.

Most recently, James was engaged with Jacobs Engineering focused primarily on construction monitoring for Watercare’s $1.2b Central Interceptor, the 14.5km sewer that will protect Auckland’s beaches. Prior to that he spent nine years in the USA working for a defence contractor delivering maritime assets. Back in New Zealand, he worked in the medical industry manufacturing components for orthopedic implants, then went to work on a series of successfully delivered major projects with Fletcher Engineering and Fulton Hogan.

James enjoys being part of a team. He learned early in his career that no one achieves anything by themselves. He argues that we’re all part of a team – we either all win or we all lose, there is no in between. His management style is to lead by example; he likes to engage with the team and empower them with the tools they need to succeed.

During downtime, he loves to spend time with his partner Kirsten and their two dogs. Travel is another passion. James also enjoys being active and keeping fit.
