RCP is providing Design Management and Project Management services for the restoration of the iconic and historic Sargeant Gallery situated on the Whanganui skyline.
The new 3300m2 purpose-built building will increase archival art storage to re-house the significant and extensive Sargeant Collection while also meeting the stringent environmental requirements of touring exhibitions. Deemed an earthquake risk by meeting only 5% of the current New Zealand Building Standard, the seismic strengthening will preserve the category 1 listed Sarjeant. The strengthening will utilise an innovative post-tension-ed cable system and will also avoid destructive work to the Oamaru stone facade and intricate interior plasterwork.
The project is a partnership between Whanganui District Council, Whanganui Mana Whenua Te Runanga o Tupoho, Central government, and Philanthropic Donors. This redevelopment is the largest cultural project undertaken in Whanganui since the original Sarjeant. It will enhance a critical component of the national arts infrastructure and will will be the largest arts development in the lower North Island since Te Papa.
RCP is proud to be on the team delivering this transformative project for the Whanganui region.
